In my school, I read a verse of Kabir talking about musk deer. According to that verse, some kind of aroma lies in that deer’s nave, but it wanders through the forest to seek it. I always wondered, does that kind of deer really exist? But never researched. A few days ago, I again read this “musk” word written on a perfume bottle. So, the insect of curiosity became active and I googled musk deer immediately.

What I found?

They live in forested and alpine scrub habitats in the mountains of South Asia. Generally, far from human habitations. They are herbivores, shy and either nocturnal or crepuscular. They leave a scent mark to define their territory. This scent lies in their sac or pod. The scent sac secretes a substance which is “musk”. Male deer use this scent to attract female deer.

Why are they hunted?

They are poached for this musk secreting sac. It is used in traditional East Asian medicine. It treats a variety of ailments. This sac is also used in detergents and cosmetic products especially perfumes.

Time for some philosophy

As Kabir says in his verse that musk deer wanders throughout the forest to seek musk but it lies in its nave only. Similary God lies in our heart but we seek Him everywhere.

P.S. : I find this concept interesting. Isn’t it? We often search solution of our problem here and there but sometimes what requires is just a touch of our soul. Right? Calm down and be patient. The strength which is required to confront the problem lies in you only. My P.S. got a little bit long. Lol!
